Comprehensive Immigration Reform Proposed by House Democrats

|

A group of centrist Democrats in the House of Representatives recently proposed a new bill that would bring changes to a large portion of the United States’ immigration laws and push toward House progress on reform. As reported by the American Immigration Council, the group proposed a modification of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, a bipartisan Senate bill from earlier this year that was passed by the Senate, but has not been heard by the House of Representatives.

This modified House bill incorporates another bill that passed unanimously out of the House Committee in May and adopts provisions from the McCaul-Thompson bill. If passed, the bill would change the “border surge” strategy that was adopted in the Corker-Hoeven amendment.

Sponsors of the bill have stated that they view the current active Senate bill to be imperfect and the immigration system to be broken.

The bill is reported to be a result of bipartisan policy and political compromises and is sponsored by House Representatives Garcia, Polis, Chu, DelBane, and Horsford. The co-sponsors represent multiple Democratic Party interests, including the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, New Democrats Coalition, Congressional Black Caucus, and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
